Who publishes this site
5-Hour Course Zoom Rating is published by a small team based in New York that works in driver education and also works with Coreway Driving School and the three course booking sites listed here: Take 5-Hour Course, NY 5-Hour Course and 5 Hour Class NYC. We write the guides, collect the facts and maintain the ratings.
The site does not sell the course and does not issue certificates. You book with the school you choose, and that school issues your MV-278 or, for online courses, reports your completion to the DMV. We are not affiliated with the New York State DMV.
Why we rate only options you can take from home
If you are about to book a class from your living room, the same questions come up. Does a Zoom class really count? Do I need my camera on? How does the certificate reach me? What if I am under 18? Most comparison pages answer them in a sentence, or not at all, because they are written for classroom schools first.
We built this site around those questions. It rates live online classes first, because a live Zoom class is open from age 16 and ends with the paper MV-278, and it covers the state’s online self-paced option for adults 18 and older as the alternative. Every guide explains what the DMV requires, what each school adds on top and what you should have ready on the day. Start with how a Zoom 5-hour class works or the class-day checklist.
How the ranking is built
The relationship described above is also set out in the disclosure box on this page and in the footer, so you can weigh our ranking with it in mind. Every other school in the ranking appears without any arrangement with us.
Positions are assessed against the same published criteria and weights, which reward a published price, a live online class, English and Spanish, several class dates a week and road test help. You can read the full method on how we rate, and the ranking links to every provider’s own website so you can check any fact before you pay.
How we keep the facts accurate
Provider details come from each provider’s public website, and rules come from the NYS DMV. We re-check every listing monthly, and the “Updated” date on each page shows when it was last reviewed. When a provider does not publish a detail, we write that it is not stated rather than guess. Prices and class dates change often, so confirm them on the provider’s site before you book.
Corrections
If a price, date or rule here no longer matches what a provider or the DMV publishes, the provider’s page or the DMV’s page is correct and ours is out of date. We correct confirmed errors at the next check or sooner, and we update the date at the top of the page when we do.
What this site does not cover
We explain the course, not your whole licensing situation. If you hold an expired NY license, a license from another state or Canada, or a license from another country, the rules for you may differ. An expired NY license that has been expired for two years or more means applying as a new driver, which includes the course; the DMV’s page on renewing a driver license has the details. Many out-of-state and Canadian licenses can be exchanged without the course under the conditions on the DMV’s exchange page, while drivers with a license from another country should read the DMV’s page for drivers from other countries, because the course is required for them.
For anything not spelled out on this site, the DMV is the authority and your school is the best first call.
Disclosure:
this site is published by a team that also works with Coreway Driving School and the course booking sites 5 Hour Class NYC, NY 5-Hour Course and Take 5-Hour Course. Scores are our own editorial assessment, and the facts in every table come from the providers’ public websites, so you can check them before you pay.
No other school listed here has any arrangement with us, and none of them paid to be listed.
