Zoom 5-Hour Class Checklist: What to Have Ready

Most trouble on class day can be avoided. Work through this list the evening before, and the five hours themselves become the easy part.

Updated October 2026

Documents: your permit and ID

The school has to identify you before it can issue a certificate, so the documents come first. The DMV requires you to pre-register and present your learner permit, and the school confirms your identity at enrollment and again during the course.

  • Your valid NY learner permit. You need one before you start the course, and the school records the permit information. Keep the physical card on your desk, not in a bag across the room.
  • A NYS photo ID, if your permit is on paper. Coreway and Super Starz both accept a paper permit together with a NYS ID. Super Starz does not accept a passport as ID.
  • A photo or scan of the permit, if the school asks for an upload. Grand Prix and Super Starz ask for it at registration.
  • Your booking confirmation. Keep the date, time and joining details where you can find them in a hurry.

One small detail from Grand Prix is worth copying everywhere: your Zoom name should match the name on your permit. Change it before you join, not after the instructor asks.

Device, camera and microphone

Choose the device you trust most, then set it up before class day.

  • A laptop, desktop or tablet on a stable surface. You will be looking at it for five hours, so prop it up rather than holding it.
  • A camera and a microphone that work. Camera-on is a school policy, not a DMV rule, but Grand Prix and Image Driving School both state it and Coreway checks your permit on camera. Image Driving School also requires a microphone.
  • The right app, updated. Install or update Zoom (or the platform your school names) a day ahead, so a forced update does not eat the first ten minutes of class.
  • A charger plugged in. Five hours of video will run down most batteries.
  • Headphones, if you have them. They make the instructor easier to hear, especially in a shared home.
  • Notifications off. Silence your phone and close chat and email windows so nothing pops up on camera.

Test the camera and microphone the evening before. If the school emails a Zoom link in advance, as New York Auto School does, open it early to confirm it loads.

Internet and power

A live class cannot be paused for a slow connection, so give your internet a little planning.

  • Sit close to the router, or connect by cable if your laptop has a port.
  • Ask people in your home to hold off on streaming and big downloads during the class.
  • Keep your phone charged and your hotspot ready as a backup, so a dropped Wi-Fi signal does not end your class.
  • Do a quick speed check and a test call a few hours before, not five minutes before.

Why this matters: several schools state that partial attendance does not count. Coreway requires you to attend the full class, and Image Driving School voids partial attendance and has you retake it. A stable connection is the cheapest insurance against retaking five hours.

A quiet space

Image Driving School puts it plainly: join from a quiet place, not from a car and not from work. The DMV makes a similar demand of the instructor, whose location must be free of distraction, so it is only fair that yours is too.

  • Pick a table or desk with a chair, and face a window or lamp so the camera shows you clearly.
  • Tell the people you live with when the class starts and when it ends.
  • Keep pets, music and the TV out of the room.
  • Put water and a snack within reach so you are not hunting for them mid-session.
  • Leave the permit, a pen and a notepad on the desk.

If you cannot find a quiet room at home, a classroom may be the better format. Our Zoom, classroom and self-paced comparison explains the trade-offs.

Timing: block the whole class

A live 5-hour class is five hours of instruction, and that cannot be shortened. Treat it like a shift.

  • Block the full window plus a buffer. A class that starts at 5 PM, like the Tuesday and Thursday classes at Coreway and the three booking sites, means planning to be free until at least 10 PM. A Saturday class at 1 PM, or a Spanish class on a Sunday at 3 PM, works the same way.
  • Log in about ten minutes early. That leaves time for the identity check and for fixing small problems.
  • Eat first. Image Driving School states that its class runs exactly five hours with no breaks, so ask each school how breaks work before you book.
  • Clear your calendar. Do not schedule a commute, a shift or a family event inside the window.
  • Check the cancellation notice. Coreway and Grand Prix allow free changes with at least 24 hours’ notice, while Image Driving School gives no refund for no-shows.

If your connection drops

Even a good setup fails sometimes. If it happens to you, do these in order.

  1. Rejoin the session straight away, using the same link. Save the school’s contact details in your phone before class so you can reach it without searching.
  2. If your Wi-Fi is down, switch to your phone’s hotspot and rejoin.
  3. Contact the school as soon as you can using the contact details the school gave you at booking, and tell them the time you were disconnected.
  4. Follow the school’s instruction. We cannot list every school’s policy, and several state that partial attendance does not count, so do not assume a partial class will be counted.

The best time to ask is before you pay: find out what the school does if you are disconnected and how long you have to rejoin.

After the class

The class ends, but the paperwork does not. Note the school’s delivery method for the MV-278 and what you need to do to receive it.

  • Coreway issues the certificate the next business day with a same-day digital confirmation, and delivers it by USPS or for pickup at 590B New York Avenue in Brooklyn.
  • Grand Prix mails it the next day, and New York Auto School mails it to your permit address the next business day.
  • Drive Rite mails it for $5 or offers Brooklyn pickup, and Image Driving School has you sign and collect it at its office.

Sign the MV-278 before you schedule your road test, keep the original safe, and bring it to the test, because copies are not accepted. It is valid for one year and must be valid when you book. Under 18, you also wait six months from the date you received your permit before the test and bring the MV-262. The DMV’s page on preparing for your road test lists everything to bring, and our class walk-through covers what to expect on the way there.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a webcam to take a Zoom 5-hour class?

Plan on it. The DMV requires schools to confirm your identity throughout the course, Grand Prix and Image Driving School state camera requirements, and Coreway checks your permit on camera. A laptop’s built-in camera is usually enough, but ask the school if you are unsure.

Can I use my phone instead of a laptop?

Whether a phone works depends on the school, so ask before you book if a phone is your only device. For five hours of live video, a laptop, desktop or tablet on a stable surface is the safer choice.

How early should I log in?

We suggest about ten minutes early. Schools check your identity before and during the class, and the extra time covers a forgotten password, an app update or a permit that needs to be shown on camera.

Can I eat or step away during the class?

That is up to the school. Image Driving School states that its class runs exactly five hours with no breaks, and Coreway requires you to attend the full class. Eat beforehand and ask the school how it handles a short break.

What if my permit is on paper?

Bring a NYS photo ID with it. Coreway and Super Starz accept a paper permit together with a NYS ID, and Super Starz states that a passport is not accepted.

What should I do the night before?

Charge your device, update the video app, test your camera and microphone, find your permit, set your Zoom name to match it, and clear the five hours on your calendar. Then check your booking confirmation for the date and joining details.
