5-Hour Course Zoom Rating

Our method

How We Rate Online 5-Hour Courses

Every score on this site comes from the same six criteria, with fixed weights, applied to facts you can check on each provider’s own website.

Updated October 2026

What we rate, and what we do not

This site ranks ways to take New York’s 5-hour pre-licensing course from home. That means live online classes on Zoom first, and the state’s online self-paced option for adults second. Thirteen providers are in the ranking. One of them, Image Driving School, also runs a classroom session, and we rate it on its online offer.

We rate what a provider publishes and how well it serves someone studying at home. We do not sit in on classes, survey students or judge the quality of anyone’s teaching, so a score is not a verdict on an instructor. It tells you how well a provider’s published offer fits the way people take the course from home.

The six criteria and their weights

Each provider is assessed against the same six criteria. The weights add up to 100% and are the same for every provider.

CriterionWeightWhat we look for
Live online availability and class frequency25%A live online class, and how many dates a week you can choose from
Price and transparency20%A price shown on the provider’s site, with fees and extras stated
Languages15%English and Spanish classes, not only a translated website
Clarity of online-class rules15%What you need, plus camera and attendance information, set out before you pay
Booking and certificate handling15%How you reserve a seat, and how the MV-278 is issued and delivered
Extras (road test help)10%Road test appointment booking and a car for the test

The result is an editorial score out of 10, shown to one decimal place. We do not publish sub-scores for each criterion. Instead, each provider card and review lists the specific facts behind the score, so you can weigh them for your own situation.

Where our facts come from

Every fact in a table or review comes from one of two places. Provider facts such as price, schedule, languages and certificate delivery come from the provider’s own public website, usually its class page or booking flow. Rules come from the NYS DMV, for example its page on the driver pre-licensing course and its list of online providers.

When a provider does not publish something, we say that it is not stated and leave it at that. We do not fill gaps with guesses, and we leave out claims we cannot confirm, such as self-reported student counts or ratings quoted on a school’s own site. Prices and schedules in this ranking are as published in October 2026.

How often we check

We re-check every listing once a month and update the “Updated” date at the top of the page. Prices, class dates and policies change often, so treat our figures as a guide and confirm them on the provider’s website before you pay. If a school changes something between our checks, its own site is always the final word.

Our relationship with some providers, and how to read the top of the ranking

The publisher of this site works with Coreway Driving School and the three course booking sites in the ranking: Take 5-Hour Course, NY 5-Hour Course and 5 Hour Class NYC. We say so in the footer and on the about page. Every other provider appears without any arrangement with us.

Those four hold the top four places, and we want you to see why. They publish a price, run a live online class, teach in English and Spanish, offer several class dates a week and sell road test help, which are exactly the things our criteria reward. Because we have a relationship with these four, do not take our word for it: every provider card links to the provider’s own site, so you can check the facts yourself.

The scores among the three booking sites are close because they publish the same class dates, price and road test add-ons. Coreway leads them on details its listing states plainly, such as group size, rescheduling and certificate delivery. Outside the top four, Drive Rite leads on class frequency, and New York Auto School is the highest-ranked live school with classes in both English and Spanish.

What a score is not

A score is not a customer rating, not a review by former students and not an endorsement by the DMV. We are not affiliated with the New York State DMV. The score is our editorial assessment of how well each provider’s published offer serves someone taking the course from home, nothing more.

Frequently asked questions

Are the scores based on customer reviews?

No. Scores are our own editorial assessment against the six published criteria. We do not collect or average customer reviews, and we do not quote ratings from a provider’s website.

Why are three of the top four listings so close in score?

Take 5-Hour Course, NY 5-Hour Course and 5 Hour Class NYC publish the same class dates, the same $40 price and the same road test add-ons, so the criteria separate them very little. They differ mostly in how each site presents the class.

How often are the ratings updated?

Every listing is re-checked monthly, and the date at the top of each page shows the latest check. Prices and class dates can change in between, so confirm them with the provider before you pay.

Why does the ranking only include options for taking the course at home?

The site is built for learners who want to complete the course without travelling to a classroom: live online classes first, plus the state’s online self-paced option for adults 18 and older. Image Driving School also runs classroom sessions, and we rate it on its online offer.
