Who a Spanish-language class is for

Plenty of New Yorkers speak English well enough to get through daily life and still prefer to learn rules and road situations in Spanish. A parent may also want to be sure a 16- or 17-year-old understands every point before the road test. A class taught in Spanish lets you spend five hours following the lesson instead of translating it in your head.

Nothing about the course changes when the language does. You still need a valid NY learner permit, the school still has to identify you, and you still complete the full class to receive a certificate. The only difference is the language the instructor teaches in.

Is a Spanish class the same course, and the same MV-278?

Yes on both counts. A Spanish class is the state’s pre-licensing course, delivered live by a qualified instructor, and it ends with the same MV-278 certificate as an English class. The examiner at the road test sees the same form either way, and the rules about validity are identical: one year, valid on the day you book, original in hand at the test. Price works the same way: the three booking sites list one flat $40 for English and Spanish classes alike.

The DMV also has a rule that helps you shop. A course taught in a language other than English must say so in its advertising. That means you can expect a school with a real Spanish class to state it on the class page or schedule. A Spanish version of the website on its own is not the same thing, so look for the class itself.

Spanish classes you can book

The cards above show the options we rate. In plain terms:

  • Coreway: a Spanish class on select Sundays at 3 PM with a bilingual instructor, from $40. The class is live on Zoom, with small groups (the schedule shows 5–12 seats per class).
  • Take 5-Hour Course, NY 5-Hour Course and 5 Hour Class NYC: the same Sunday 3 PM Spanish class on select dates, a flat $40, and a full Spanish version of each site. You reserve a seat with a short form (name and phone) and the school confirms the details with you.
  • New York Auto School: live Zoom classes in English and in Spanish on weekdays and weekends at $65. The Zoom link is emailed to you, and the MV-278 is mailed to your permit address the next business day. Days and times are not listed on the class page, so check the booking flow.
  • NTSI: an online self-paced course with a Spanish version at $44.95. It is for learners 18 and older with a valid NY photo learner permit, and it issues no paper MV-278.

Spanish classes at Coreway and the three booking sites run on select Sundays only, which makes them scarcer than the Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday English classes. Choose the Spanish date first, then plan the rest of your week around it.

Several other schools in our ranking do not state a class language, among them Drive Rite, Grand Prix, Image Driving School, Pierre Paul and Super Starz. That does not mean they teach in English only, but you cannot assume a Spanish class either. If one of them fits your schedule best, ask the school which language it teaches in before you pay.

How a Spanish class works from your living room

A Spanish Zoom class follows the same steps as an English one. You book a date, show your learner permit so the school can record it, join the video session, stay for the full five hours and receive the MV-278 afterwards. Our step-by-step guide goes through each stage, and the class-day checklist covers the camera, the internet and the quiet space.

Some practical points matter more in a Spanish class:

  • Camera. Camera-on is a school policy rather than a DMV rule, and several schools state it, so expect to be on camera.
  • Permit. Coreway checks the permit on camera and accepts either a plastic NY photo learner permit or a paper permit with a NYS photo ID.
  • Questions. The DMV requires that instructor and students can interact as in a classroom, so ask in Spanish as you would in a room.
  • The full five hours. Do not plan to leave early. Coreway requires full attendance, and partial attendance does not earn a certificate.

Online self-paced in Spanish for adults

Adults 18 and older can choose the DMV’s online self-paced route. Providers on the DMV’s list of online providers are tagged with the languages they offer, and NTSI, the Staten Island-based provider in our ranking, offers Spanish. You have 30 days from registration to finish, the course checks your identity as you go, and no paper certificate is issued: the provider reports your completion to the DMV, usually within 24 to 48 hours.

The online course is not open to junior-license (DJ/MJ) applicants, so a teen who wants Spanish needs a live class. Our comparison of the three formats explains the difference in more detail.

Where language matters, and where it does not

The 5-hour course is one requirement on the way to a license. This site covers the course only. If you are planning your permit test or road test and want to know which languages the DMV offers for those steps, contact the DMV directly, because the DMV sets those steps, not your class.

What does carry over from the course is paperwork. Keep your MV-278 safe, bring the original to your road test, and note that if you lose it, the school that issued it provides the replacement and may charge a fee. The DMV’s page on preparing for your road test lists what to bring.

Tips for choosing a Spanish class

  • Ask which language the whole class uses. Coreway describes a bilingual instructor for its Spanish Sunday class. For any other school, confirm that the class itself is in Spanish and not only the website or the chat support. Amethyst Driving School, for example, offers its site and chat assistant in English, Spanish and Russian but does not state the language of the class.
  • Book the date before you pay. With Spanish seats on select Sundays, it is worth checking the next date and the seats left.
  • Have your permit ready. Check whether your permit is plastic or paper, and find a NYS photo ID if it is paper.
  • Compare the total price. Coreway adds a 2.9% fee on card payments, while Take 5-Hour Course, NY 5-Hour Course and 5 Hour Class NYC charge a flat $40. New York Auto School lists $65.
  • See the whole ranking. Spanish is only one of the six things we score, so the full ranking shows how each school does on price, schedule and certificate handling too.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Spanish 5-hour class the same as the English one?

Yes. It is the same pre-licensing course, taught live by a qualified instructor, and it ends with the same MV-278 certificate. The language of instruction is the only difference.

When are the Spanish classes?

Coreway and the three booking sites hold their Spanish class on select Sundays at 3 PM. New York Auto School teaches in English and Spanish on weekdays and weekends, but its class page does not list days and times, so check the booking flow.

Can I take the online self-paced course in Spanish?

Yes, if you are 18 or older and hold a valid NY photo learner permit. NTSI offers a Spanish version for $44.95. The online course issues no paper MV-278, and applicants for junior (DJ/MJ) licenses are not eligible.

Will the instructor teach the whole class in Spanish?

Coreway says its Spanish Sunday class has a bilingual instructor. For other schools, ask before you book, because the DMV requires a course taught in a language other than English to say so. If the class page only mentions a Spanish website, ask about the class.

Can a 16- or 17-year-old take a Spanish Zoom class?

Live classes are open from age 16 under the DMV’s rules, and Coreway accepts junior permits (DJ/MJ). Under 18, the road test comes six months after the permit and requires the MV-262 showing 50 hours of supervised driving, 15 of them after sunset.
