Start with the nearest date
On Take 5-Hour Course the schedule is the first thing to read. Classes run on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM and on Saturday at 1:00 PM in English, plus select Sundays at 3:00 PM in Spanish. Each one is the full five-hour class, taught live.
If you want the requirement behind you, the practical move is simple: look at the next few dates, take the earliest one you can attend for five straight hours, and reserve it. The word that matters is “attend”. A Thursday cut short by a work call is a class you did not complete, and the MV-278 is issued only after you complete the class. Nothing about the course can be shortened, so choose the date when nothing else will tug at your evening.
Nothing in the $40 price depends on how fast you book, so there is no reason to grab the first date you see if it clashes with your week. The nearest date you can truly attend is the right one.
Reserving takes a short form
You reserve a seat online with a short form that asks for your name and phone number, and the school then confirms the details with you. It is a light first step, and it makes that confirmation the right moment to ask what you need on the night: which permit format works, if the camera has to stay on, and how you will join.
The DMV calls this format distance learning or a virtual classroom. It requires live, real-time teaching by a qualified instructor, with identity checks at enrollment and during the course, and Zoom is the best-known example of the software. So plan on a working camera and microphone and a permit you can reach without leaving your chair.
The night before: a five-minute setup
- Charge your device and keep it plugged in. Five hours drains a battery faster than you expect.
- Test the Wi-Fi in the exact spot where you will sit. If the signal is weak, move closer to the router or use a cable.
- Put your learner permit where you can grab it without leaving the screen.
- Join under your real name rather than a nickname, so the school can match you to your permit.
- Silence notifications and tell the people at home that you are in class for the full five hours.
The longer version lives in our Zoom class checklist.
$40 flat, nothing extra for the certificate
The class is $40 flat, and the certificate carries no extra charge. The MV-278 is issued after you complete the class, so ask when you confirm your seat how it will reach you. When it does, keep the paper original safe: the DMV requires the original, not a copy, at the road test, and the certificate is valid for one year.
The same dates and the same $40 appear on NY 5-Hour Course and 5 Hour Class NYC, so pick the site whose layout you like. Take 5-Hour Course is second in our ranking, just behind Coreway, on the strength of a published flat price, English and Spanish classes, several dates a week and road test help.
After the class, the road test is the slow part
The DMV says the earliest road test slots are usually 3 to 5 weeks away and up to 10 weeks in busy periods, so book early. Take 5-Hour Course offers help with that: standard appointment booking is $25 (usually 5 to 9 weeks out), rush booking is $75 (usually 1 to 3 weeks), and a car for the road test is $115.
If you are under 18, you must also wait six months after getting the permit and bring the MV-262 showing 50 hours of supervised driving, 15 of them after sunset. The DMV’s road test page lists everything to bring.
What we like
- Flat $40, certificate included at no extra charge
- Designed around getting you into the nearest open date
- Full Spanish version of the site, plus a Spanish class on select Sundays at 3 PM
- Road test help on the same site: booking $25 or rush $75, car $115
Keep in mind
- Fixed class dates: Tuesday and Thursday at 5 PM, Saturday at 1 PM in English
- A seat is reserved with a short form and confirmed by the school afterward
Our verdict
If your main goal is to get the course finished soon, Take 5-Hour Course keeps the decision small: look at the posted dates, take the nearest one that fits your week, and reserve a seat with your name and phone number. The price is a flat $40 with nothing added for the certificate, classes run in English and Spanish, and the road test add-ons are priced on the site. Because dates are fixed, check the schedule against your work or school hours before you reserve. It scores just behind Coreway, and it publishes the same class schedule and price as the two other booking sites in the top four.
