NY 5-Hour Course Review: Live Online, Guided by Borough

NY 5-Hour Course teaches the class online and organizes its guidance borough by borough. Here is what that means when you take the course from your own living room.

9.4/10

Does your borough matter for an online class?

For the class itself, hardly. You join from wherever you have a screen and a quiet corner, and the schedule is the same for everyone: Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM and Saturday at 1:00 PM in English, with select Sundays at 3:00 PM in Spanish.

Your borough matters afterward. The road test happens at a DMV test site near the ZIP code you enter when you schedule it, which is where the borough pages on NY 5-Hour Course come in. The site serves learners in all five boroughs and has a page for each of them (Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island), plus articles, all aimed at giving clear guidance borough by borough.

How do you reserve a seat?

Pick a date from the schedule and fill in a short form with your name and phone number. The school confirms the details with you afterward, and that is your chance to raise anything specific to your situation, such as which permit you hold or how you will join the class.

Think about the shape of your week before you choose. Two of the three English slots start at 5:00 PM on a weekday, which means a full evening, so skip the dinner plans and the late shift. Saturday at 1:00 PM trades the weeknight for an afternoon.

If you are a parent booking for a teenager, take part in the confirmation so the details are right the first time, and check the road test rules for under-18 drivers together.

What does a class night ask of you?

The DMV describes this format as distance learning, or a virtual classroom, and sets its terms: live, real-time instruction by a qualified instructor, and identity checks at enrollment and during the course. Zoom is the first example of software the DMV names. For you, that comes down to a short list:

  • a camera and microphone that work, so the instructor can interact with you;
  • your learner permit within reach;
  • a quiet spot where nobody will walk in on you;
  • Wi-Fi that holds up for five hours;
  • the full class, from the first minute to the last.

Our checklist turns this into a step-by-step list, and how a Zoom class works walks through the evening itself.

Is there a Spanish version?

Yes, twice over. The whole site has a full Spanish version, and the Sunday classes at 3:00 PM are taught in Spanish. A class in Spanish is the same course and gives the same MV-278 as one in English. The DMV only requires that a course taught in another language says so in its advertising. If Spanish is the language you think in, pick a Sunday date. Our Spanish-language guide lists the providers that teach in Spanish.

What does it cost, and what comes after?

The class is $40 flat with no extra charge for the certificate, and the MV-278 is issued after you complete the class. If you want help with the road test, standard appointment booking is $25 (usually 5 to 9 weeks out), rush booking is $75 (usually 1 to 3 weeks) and a car for the test is $115.

Booking help matters because the road test is the long wait: the DMV says the earliest slots are usually 3 to 5 weeks out and up to 10 weeks in busy periods. Under 18, you also have to wait six months after getting your permit and bring the MV-262. The DMV’s road test page lists the rest.

NY 5-Hour Course is third in our ranking. Its dates and price match those of Take 5-Hour Course and 5 Hour Class NYC; what it emphasizes is the way it lays out guidance for each borough.

What we like

  • Flat $40, certificate included
  • A dedicated page for each of the five boroughs
  • Seat reserved with a short form: just your name and phone
  • Road test help on site: $25 standard or $75 rush booking, car $115

Keep in mind

  • Fixed class dates; the Spanish class runs on select Sundays only
  • The school confirms your seat after you submit the form

Our verdict

NY 5-Hour Course suits you if you like to see your own borough addressed before you commit. The class is a live online 5-hour session at a flat $40 on a posted schedule, in English and in Spanish, and the pages for Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island keep the advice specific. Booking is a short form with your name and phone number, followed by a confirmation from the school. The road test add-ons, from $25 for a standard appointment to $115 for a car, are listed so you can plan the next step before you pay for the class.

Best for: Learners who want guidance written for their own borough

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in a particular borough to take the class?

No. The class is online, and the site serves learners in all five boroughs. Your borough matters mainly for the road test that comes later.

Which days are English and which are Spanish?

English classes run on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00 PM and Saturday at 1:00 PM. Spanish classes run on select Sundays at 3:00 PM.

Is $40 the final price?

The class is $40 flat, with no extra charge for the certificate. Road test appointment booking ($25 standard, $75 rush) and a car for the test ($115) are optional extras.

Can a 16-year-old take it?

The DMV allows live online classes from age 16, and the certificate is the paper MV-278. Tell the school which permit you hold when it confirms your seat.
